Standard 5: Research
Candidates explore, evaluate, synthesize, and apply methods of inquiry to enhance learning and improve performance.
S. 5.1.
Theoretical Foundations
Candidates demonstrate foundational knowledge of the contribution of research to the past and current theory of educational communications and technology.
Artifact
EDF 6481 / Spring 2019 / Research Proposal
This artifact is a research proposal for a study of scenario-based gamification in customer service training. For this proposal, I conducted a literature review and applied best practices to the development of the research methods for my proposed study. This artifact demonstrates my ability to analyze and synthesize research as well as detect gaps in the research and design a study to attempt to fill those gaps.
S. 5.2.
Method
Candidates apply research methodologies to solve problems and enhance practice.
Artifact
EDF 6284 / Summer 2019 / Using Data Project
For this project, I analyzed data from the USF InfoCenter and made recommendations regarding changes to education programs at universities. First, I researched trends in education across the U.S., during which I discovered a gradual decrease in the number of university students entering education programs. I then searched and analyzed headcount data for USF education programs, where I found a similar trend, and made recommendations accordingly. This artifact demonstrates my ability to analyze data, visualize data, and create a report presenting said data and recommendations.
S. 5.3.
Assessing/Evaluating
Candidates apply formal inquiry strategies in assessing and evaluating processes and resources for learning and performance.
Artifact
EME 6055 / Fall 2018 / Final Paper
This final paper discusses performance support as the future of workplace training. In this analysis, I synthesize research on performance support as well as learning theories, including situated learning theory, schema and cognitive load theory, and Keller's ARCS model of motivation, that support it as an effective training strategy. Additionally, I discuss augmented reality specifically as an emerging form of performance support that has a lot of potential, as well as the learning theories that support its use.
S. 5.4.
Ethics
Candidates conduct research and practice using accepted professional and institutional guidelines and procedures.
